Born in 1919 and raised in Uruguay, Antonio Frasconi is best known for his woodcuts. As a teenager he worked as a printer's apprentice, before moving to the United States on a one-year scholarship to the Art Students League of New York at the end of the Second World War; he remained in the USA for the rest of his life. As an artist he repeatedly addressed war, racism and poverty; between 1981 and 1986 he produced a series of woodcuts called 'The Disappeared', which portrayed the victims of the civic-military dictatorship of Uruguay. Frasconi illustrated over 100 books in his lifetime and was elected to the American National Academy of Design in 1969.
